Vocational Development: Mentoring Session

Since 2018, the CSA has been implementing vocational development courses in Dharavi Island as part of the Skills Development Program. Their objective is to provide marginalized and school/college dropouts with skill training and job placements to improve their economic status and support their families. The program has held four batches of the Sales Executive Course (SEC), Basic Home Appliance Repairs (BHAR), and Mobile and Laptop Repair (MLR), certifying 116 students through CSA’s network and knowledge partners.

While some students are employed, self-employed, or engaged in higher studies, others still assist in household work. The CCO regularly follows up with students, providing guidance and assistance. To further help them, a mentoring session was held on May 5th, 2023, to answer queries and clarify doubts and motivate them for their careers.

The session began with a welcome and introduction of the resource person. CSA staff facilitated an interactive discussion with participants about their work status and challenges faced. Participants shared their work life, salary package, travel time, work timing issues, and the effects of lockdown.

Participants of SEC felt proud and utilized their knowledge to compete with others, while BHAR and MLR courses helped them earn income with minimal investment. Spoken English and personality development courses helped them hold conversations, gain confidence, and manage their salary to support their families. Students also expressed interest in advertising the courses to others and approaching CSA for placement support.

After the interactive session, the resource person gave a motivational talk on setting goals and achieving dreams. Students asked questions and had their doubts clarified. The session concluded with a vote of thanks.
