Turning the Tide: Prioritising Education over Marriage

The villagers of Fhanaswadi Katkari Tribal Wadi, located 15 km from the main road in Raigad district, face significant challenges in accessing job opportunities. Due to the lack of employment facilities in the area, many families are forced to work in brick kilns, which often prevents their children from receiving an education.

When interventions began in Fhanaswadi, the children were informed about educational opportunities, such as supplementary classes and the Kishori program. A series of meetings were held to raise awareness about the importance of education. One girl in the Kishori group, who had completed her 10th grade, initially faced resistance to pursuing further education due to cultural beliefs that prioritize marriage after a certain age. However, she reached out to the wadi prerika after one of the meetings to discuss her situation.

In response, the wadi prerika contacted the girl’s parents and emphasized the importance of higher education. Understanding its value, her parents ultimately agreed to allow her to continue her studies. The girl was thrilled to enroll in 11th grade with the support of the wadi prerika. Despite initial hesitation from her parents, who believed she should marry after finishing 10th grade, they came to recognize the significance of education.

Now, the girl attends college in Pen and goes to class daily, striving to excel in her studies. Her progress has also inspired other students in the community to value education. She remains eager to continue her academic journey.
