Initiative by Wadi Prerika to Stop Child Labour

Two children from the Bal Sabha had completed 8th grade and expressed a desire to continue their education. They are orphans; one boy is cared for by his elderly grandmother, while the other is looked after by his grandparents. During the holiday season, the boys began working at a nearby chemical company, where they were tasked with refilling chemical powder into bags without any safety precautions. As a result, they missed the Bal Sabha meeting.

The Centre for Social Action had previously conducted a Training of Trainers program at the center level focused on the formation of an Ideal Bal Panchayat. The grassroots social workers from Prerna, Rees attended. During this session, participants learned how to encourage out-of-school children in the Wadi to return to education.

During one of the Bal Sabha meetings, the Wadi Prerika discovered the situation of these boys. Recognising that they were below 18 years of age and working, which constitutes child labour, she decided to hold a Bal Sabha meeting in the evening so that the boys could attend and learn about the issue of child labour. The meeting was scheduled for April 27, 2024, at 7:30 PM. During this meeting, she shared information about the Child Labour Act and the health risks associated with working in chemical companies. This information was valuable not only for the two boys but for other attendees as well.

After hearing from the Wadi Prerika, the boys chose to quit their jobs, realising they were too young to be part of the workforce. They are now staying home to help their grandparents and have resumed their studies. The Prerana Centre will provide support for their uniforms and other educational needs.
