Menstruation Hygiene Campaign

In Dharavi Island (DI), Kishori is one of the project intervention groups under CSA that has been providing adolescent girls with information on various topics for the past two years. On May 28th, which is dedicated to Menstruation Hygiene and Cleanliness, the DI project coordinator requested an awareness campaign to be organized across the six CCOs of Dharavi Island. The campaign, which included interactive activities such as videos, questionnaires, and discussions, was held on various dates and attended by a total of 147 participants.

During the event, the CCO staff welcomed the participants and explained the history and purpose of Menstruation Hygiene Day, which was launched in 2013 by the Germany-based Wash United NGO. Afterwards, the participants were divided into groups and asked to answer a set of questions related to menstruation, such as their experiences, maintaining hygiene, communicating with teachers, and helping women during their periods.

The responses to the questions revealed some interesting findings, such as the need to create a safe and open environment for discussion and the lack of scientific knowledge about menstruation among participants. Many females felt uncomfortable talking about their menstrual cycles, and pain is a common issue during periods that many females do not like.

The participants also watched a video titled ‘Hello Periods – Complete Menstruation Guidelines’ and had the opportunity to ask questions and receive appropriate answers. The session concluded with a vote of thanks.

Overall, the awareness campaign was successful in providing valuable information and promoting a safe and open environment for discussion on the topic of menstruation hygiene.
