Training on “Sehat-Bachat Scheme”

]]> posted Nov 28, 2014, 7:09 PM by Neil D’Souza [ updated Mar 27, 2015, 10:06 AM by Csa Mumbai] Centre for Social Action (CSA) has partnered with Xavier Institute of Management & Research (XIMR) to take up projects that would make a significant impact on our society through various programmes.
To start off our new collaboration, a training session on the ‘Sehat-Bachat Scheme’ was held at St. Michael’s Church School Hall, Mahim on Saturday, November 8, from 5.30 to 8.00 p.m. This training was attended by 63 participants representing Community Based Organizations and Network Associations across the Archdiocese of Mumbai. Fr. Mario Mendes, Director of Centre for Social Action introduced the trainers – Fr. Paul Vaz, Director General of XIMR and a social activist, Sr. Rubina D’Mello, a BSW and Alka Prema Lakra an MSW from Nirmala Niketan.
Fr. Paul shared the goal and objectives of this scheme which aimed at streamlining efforts towards greater financial inclusion. This was followed by a presentation by Sr Rubina and Ms Alka, sharing their experiences on the pilot of the project carried out by XIMR and Seva Niketan which they have implemented successfully with the migrant tribals of Chottanagpur. Handouts detailing the criteria along with terms & conditions of the project were given to the participants.
Major highlights of the scheme are :
• To motivate and encourage people with low disposable income to save by
setting aside a fixed sum of money every month• To avail medical insurance from the interest earned on this savings• Separately open a Recurring Deposit account which will earn a higher interest
at prevailing rates whereby the annual interest earned is divided into 3
      sections :

  • 3% interest will go towards their savings a/c
  • 2% interest will go towards life insurance
  • 3% interest will go towards medical insurance

• Sehat – People are highly vulnerable to expensive medical treatment thus by
investing in this scheme their sudden medical expenses will be taken care of• Free health-camps and medical check-ups would be conducted on a regular
      basis.
The training elicited positive response from the participants. Fr. Mario then gave a brief on the implementation plan for rolling out this scheme in a phased manner by creating different models and terms and conditions suitable to the low income groups across the deaneries. We received very valuable and constructive feedback at the end of the session and some participants were very eager to know when this scheme would be launched in their deanery/parish and even offered their services as volunteers. We are sure that this scheme will lead to the socio-economic upliftment of the poor families that are being reached out to.

From our Director Fr. Mario Mendes

Centre for Social Action (CSA) has completed 17 years of dedicated action and service to society. This year we have worked in close association with 31 Community Centers and have
directly touched the lives of over 5500 persons. The 14 Partners from the 11 talukas in Raigad District continue to work together on enhancing the standard of education of the tribal children and network together to enable Kathkari tribals access their rightful entitlements thus taking Community Led Development to new heights.

The interventions in Dharavi Islands with the six Community Based Organizations of the Parishes has taken a new shape as they completed their initial pilot phase and are now set to move into a new partnership with Misereor to make some significant changes in the lives of the fisherfolk and farming communities with various target groups of vulnerable women and children. With Mumbai and Thane Community Based Organizations (CBOs) CSA continues to strengthen their organizational capacities to empower the target groups at the grassroots through mobilization of the community, forming them into Self Help Groups and then leading them to strengthen their financial base through income generation activities.

Being a learning organization we have had many lessons to reflect on and have been taking slow but sure steps in shaping the organization in terms of CSA staff being realigned. However let me add that the dedication of the Personnel both at the Partner and CSA level have been commendable in terms of their commitment and determination to work fearlessly with the target groups.

In the coming year we shall be looking forward to further sharpening our interventions towards achieving our target goals and further increasing our partner and resource base to ensure better coverage and impact in Thane (Dharavi Island & Kalyan), Mumbai and Raigad Districts. Thank You for your continual support and we look forward to you joining us as we journey to achieve our goals.
