The residents of Jerimeri’s 90 Feet Road, Krishna Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Mahatma Phule Nagar, and Tilak Nagar were living amidst an escalating garbage crisis. Piles of waste created dirty surroundings, posing severe health risks to children, senior citizens, and the sick. The stench and unhygienic conditions disrupted daily life, leaving the community frustrated and struggling for a solution.
In July 2024, under the guidance of the Centre for Social Action (CSA), Jagruti Kendra formed a Core Committee (CC). The committee, supported by Mahila Mandal leaders, Kishori girls, and Balsabha children, underwent training on issue identification and problem-solving. Their first mission: tackle the garbage crisis.
Led by CCO staff member and Assistant Director of Jagruti Kendra, the CC members visited the affected areas, documenting the problem and rallying the community. They drafted a formal letter to the BMC L Ward office and gathered signatures from residents to strengthen their case. A delegation comprising CC members, Mahila Mandal leaders, Kishoris, and children delivered the application to the ward officer and met with the concerned department officials.
Despite delays caused by the election season and monsoon rains, the team remained persistent. Regular follow-ups, site visits, and unwavering commitment kept the momentum alive. The ward officer and BMC officials were convinced to visit the community to witness the dire conditions firsthand.
Their relentless efforts bore fruit in November 2024, when the BMC initiated regular garbage collection in the affected areas. Vans now visit the community four times a day to clear the waste, and residents have adopted the use of dustbins to maintain cleanliness. The transformation has not only improved hygiene but also uplifted the community’s spirit.
This success story is a testament to the power of collective action, leadership, and persistence. The residents of Jerimeri have proved that united efforts can lead to impactful change, ensuring a healthier and cleaner environment for everyone.
