In the Raigad district, CSA works closely with the Katkari tribes and other marginalized communities who are educationally backward. The Kathkaris are one of the few primitive tribes existing in the country. Over the years, this tribal community has not made much progress due to illiteracy and socio-economic exploitation. As per the Government of India Census 2011 (Primary Census Abstract for the Raigad District), only 37% of the tribals in the district are literate. Of this, 46% of the males are literate and 28% of the females are literate. To counter this, CSA has been conducting supplementary classes for around 3,000 Kathkari children in 114 villages through its 14 partner NGO centre’s in order to reduce the high rate of school drop outs and increase the enrollment of new students in schools. The supplementary class teachers have also been doubling up as wadi sevikas or community animators and they work closely with the Kathkari communities in these villages for their socio-economic empowerment.
SUPPLEMENTARY CLASSES FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN
Coaching classes are provided through our 14 partner CBO’s having 131 teachers reaching out to 4230 children across 131 villages in Raigad. These children are also a part of Bal Sansads.
TRAININGS OF ANIMATORS
To keep the teachers abreast of the latest developments and to enable them to integrate social perspectives in their teaching.
WADI SEVA
The supplementary class teacher doubles up as the village social worker, organizing women into Self Help Groups & Mahila Mandals. The villagers are helped to get their documents like tribal certificates, Aadhar Cards, Ration Cards, etc. They are empowered to access government schemes, participate in Gram Panchayat meetings and break out of exploitation.
